Maria Delcarmen Benjamin is from Richmond Virginia and was raised in humble beginnings on government assistance. She will never forget going to the Optometrist to receive new glasses when the optical assistant rudely directed her to the section of unattractive glasses assigned to Medicaid children. Being on government assistance, never discouraged her. She was a dreamer. She dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age. Upon graduation, she enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserves where she served for 6 years, serving in Desert Storm as an optical technician. Maria was awarded a scholarship from the Navy to Georgetown University in D.C., where she received training as an Ophthalmic Technologist. She was employed in ophthalmology for almost 30 years. During that time, she also assisted her husband in ministry and childcare. They have been pastoring New Life Harvest Church for 19 years. About eleven years ago, they also started a Religiously Exempt Child Care Center called Next Generation Learning Center. Over the years, Maria and her husband, Bishop Leon has been able to serve children that were homeless, in foster care, and on government assistance. It has been an honor to be able to help families firsthand. Maria and her husband have also started another church plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, called The Remnant. For almost a year, they have been flying to Tulsa every week for a Thursday evening service. Her husband, Benjamin is also running for Congress in the fourth district in Virginia.
