What is Embodiment?

Embodiment is central to our life. The body and mind work as an intricately connected system that, when honored, becomes our most precious tool kit. When we have experiences of trauma, shame, or pain our body shuts down as a protective function. When we can work through our hurts and fears engaging the body, we are able to invite in more joy, freedom, and play into our lives.

Andrew Nam

During my second year of college, I decided to drop out of college to pursue my dream of entrepreneurship. I started my first business pursing my passion of the ‘fast and furious’, selling automotive parts out of my bedroom in my parents townhome. Fast forward 5 years, my business became a 5000 sq ft full service facility and was known to be the best in trade. At the turn of the century, my wife and I decided to turn a new leaf, sold our business and moved to another country to start a new life, where we started another automotive business, this time on wholesale rather than retail. Although the business was successful, I realize that my health is declining quickly. Partly due to my traumatic accident in my teens and partly due to the hard work and long days at the garage. In my early 30’s I started having problems doing simple daily tasks. It was difficult to even just get out of bed or to sit or stand for long periods of time, I had digestive issues and severe brain fog. I visited many medical specialists. I tried multiple prescription drugs and pain medicine. But all they did was help mask my symptoms. No one was addressing the root cause. By age 43, I decided that I wasn’t going to just accept the fact that my health was going to decline further. I knew I had to make a change. I decided I needed to take back charge of my health in my own hands. I studied functional nutrition under many functional doctors, scientist and specialists over the years and I became certified as a functional nutrition practitioner, personal trainer and a bio-hacker. Not only was I able to restore my own health, I am also helping others get back their health also. Over the last 9 years, I have been inspiring and teaching others how their body has the natural ability to heal themselves when it is given what it needs to thrive and survive. Everyone is a bio-individual and, given what their body needs, they can achieve optimal health. I want to inspire people that if I can recover my health, so can you. To stop using your age as an excuse. If you give your body what it needs, not only can you prevent chronic health conditions, you may even reverse chronic health conditions that you already have. Remember that age is just a number and should not determine how you look, move ,feel or act. At the age of 52, I feel younger and more energetic now then when I was in my 30’s. Love what you live, and live what you love.

He believed that the time had come to ‘reinvent’ the health industry by creating networks of likeminded, forward-thinking individuals – starting in greater DC and NYC. As they began to work together, these interdisciplinary, collaborative groups began to expand the perspectives of its members. This offshoot project eventually evolved into a thriving program, now known as Metro Collaborative. It has attracted various health professionals looking for new techniques to expand their businesses and connect with other innovators. Observing the notable progress members were making within these forums, it quickly became clear that business acceleration groups were on the cutting edge for problem-solving, as well as professional solidarity and connectivity. Indeed, these groups provide ways for business owners, physicians, dentists and practitioners of all disciplines to learn, connect and collaborate to create cross-referral opportunities. The Path to Metro Collaborative Bill’s background is extensive and spans several decades. In New York City, he worked as a psychotherapist and stress management consultant, coaching executives, physicians, and dentists on maintaining work/life balance. He extended this practice into coaching physicians on improving their business models by focusing on integrative methods for success, such as ‘client-centered communication.’ Completing a degree in psychology and humanities at Carnegie Mellon University, Bill worked as a biofeedback therapist, meditation teacher and coordinator of services at The Combined Therapy Program of The Himalayan Institute. He then completed a Masters in Counseling Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Bill moved to Greenwich Village to open The Center for Holistic Medicine in 1978 with Rudolph Ballentine, MD, practicing psychotherapy and stress management consulting. After starting a family there, he began modernizing dental and medical offices throughout the North East through the introduction of technology. Over the last few decades, he has evolved his contribution to the healthcare community, always maintaining his focus on leadership, technology, and team building. In the intervening years, he served at the Seltzer Institute, Coaching Solutions, among others.
