At an early age, I began Parentification, a process of role reversal whereas as a child I was obliged to act as a parent to my own mom. I was used to filling the void of the mom’s emotional life and became Codependent.
My mom had a borderline personality disorder and was abused as a child…
Growing up in our family had a major impact on my turning to numb out with drugs and alcohol, cigarettes, and sex. My mom had multiple affairs while married to my dad and told me all the time that she never wanted me and that I was double ugly. I felt despised by her. At five years old I began spitting my food out in a napkin and my eating disorder began.
My two stepfathers were both alcoholics and physically abusive to my mom and sexually inappropriate to me. My mom was emotionally, and physically abusive and sexually inappropriate to me. We had no boundaries in our home and our neighbors wouldn’t let their kids come to our home, so we never had a sense of belonging. At 14 years old I was date raped and developed severe body image issues. I began to numb out with amphetamines, Quaaludes, acid, and other drugs, along with alcohol and cigarettes.
I ended up graduating high school ½ year early in January of 1972 and on my 18th birthday a few weeks I moved away from home to get as far away from my family as possible. Living in the city first and then hitchhiked to Arizona, then Oregon, and then I ended up in San Diego. My life spiraled out of control, and I became addicted to crack cocaine, and the rock and roll business. One night I went to church high on cocaine and expected the Lord…God kept working in my life and because of my recovery has blessed me with a son as a single-never married mom, which added to my never returning to drugs and alcohol again.
Along the way, I had the privilege to go to treatment for my codependency, and for my eating disorders. I have sponsored over 100 women over the years and my sobriety date was in 1981 for drugs and alcohol, in 1992 for codependency, and in 2015 for my eating disorders. One therapist told me I am one of the most resilient people she has ever counseled. God continues to do healing in my life.
I am a transformational coach that helps others heal from their burdens, the author of an international bestselling collaborative book, “Fiercely Faithful” where I authored a chapter called, “The Essence of Humility”, a Podcast Show Host of “The Connection Show, and a TV show called “The Connection Gathering. I am the founder and CEO of Brave Heart Workshops and a certified meeting and event planner. Through the power of God, His Word (The Bible), and processing PTSD and trauma I’m a living example of redemption, Grace, and Healing.
Today her amazing life is about being of service to others in any way she can.
